case studies

learning all the time...
applying it every time...

These two case studies are similar in nature. They focus on the evolution of the design. It seems with every passing project I learn something new to apply to my next project. I guess I wouldn't want it any other way.

challenge

ZoZo Music based out of San Antonio wanted to extend their store front business to the internet via e-commerce. They specialize at providing musicians with the highest quality products/instruments at the lowest possible prices. They had already developed a logo but not an over all look and feel for their business. At the initial strategy meeting, they wanted the site to have an edgy, grunge feel utilizing the red to yellow gradient found in their logo. As for the function, they wanted to focus on the companies impeccable customer service and super low prices. They wanted a site that organized their products by category, brand and price. The site needed to be easily navigated and have a straight-forward checkout process. They also wanted to have the ability to maintain the site after completion.

solution

The first design comp I created utilized the gradient colors and established a grunge presence. After much discussion and planning, we decided to go into a different direction. The final solution uses black and gray as the base colors and the red, orange and yellows are used as accents. The graphics maintain a touch of grunge. We introduced the ZoZo Music Advantage which is an easily obtained list of services that set ZoZo apart from their competition. The layout and organization of content allows for a highly functioning e-commerce store where it is easy for the end-user to find the instrument of choice. The site was turned over to their web master and is maintained by ZoZo music.

challenge

IMEX Packaging is a leading International supplier of high-quality, distinctive clear bags and packaging for such companies as JC Pennies, Wal-Mart and Sears. They approached us with a need to redesign their current web presence to better represent them as a company and showcase their products. From a design perspective, they initially wanted a black and gray color scheme, quote "think Oakland Raiders football jersey", that had splashes of royal blue and green. The company has been really involved with the "Green" initiative for environmental friendly clear vinyl bags so it was important to highlight this fact. The product showcase had to be highly organized and easily updated. They wanted to be able to maintain the site upon completion.

solution

The initial design concepts focused on the black and gray color scheme and overall layout of the site. IMEX decided they wanted to really highlight the "Green" factor of their company and reworked their logo to emphasize this. The transition motivated them to move away from the industrial black and grays and adopt a more environmentally friendly color scheme of greens, blues and yellows. I reworked the home page layout and design to enhance their new direction. We used our e-commerce application to organize and present their products which allows them the ability to maintain the site themselves.
